I just saw the video with Bill and Steve, and while it is, in core content, as bad as it is written, Bill did say “we like to compete” clearly as a joke, in my mind. I think they should have pointed that out in the written article, or at least pointed out that it was debatable whether it was humorous or not.
Steve went over the “scale” argument in detail, but I think it’s just distraction. Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo to remove a competitor and if they can make it sound like increasing competition it’s going to be more likely to be allowed.

I agree with you, and I miss having these conversations with you. There are so many bright engineers and managers out there who have the capability to change the game in computing and truly move it ahead, in a fun way. Why aren’t they leading the charge? I am not an OSX or a Windows zealot, I am an innovation zealot. Are we going to depend on Apple for all innovation in computing forever?
